Historic night for Veterans

Published: 6 July 2017

On Monday night at Tilsley Park, Abingdon, Oxford City’s veteran men’s and women’s teams made a small piece of history, both winning their final league match of the season to secure double qualification for the Southern area finals at Ashford in Kent on September 3rd. For the men this is far from the first time, with the team having frequently qualified in the past, and having won the southern final on several occasions. They secured their final place with a third win out of four matches this season. For the women this is the first time, and all the more remarkable because this is only the fourth season that the women’s team has competed in the league. Their win on Monday night made four league wins out of four for the women’s team, itself a fine achievement. This is the first time that both teams have made it to the finals together, and both teams anticipate an exciting and enjoyable day out at Ashford in September.

There were a host of good performances on Monday night, but pride of place goes to Tracey Isaacs and Wendy Fowler, competing in pole vault for the first time, and both setting massive PBs. Oxford’s men dominated the track, with multiple wins in the distance events, and strong support from Gareth Davies and Stephen Macauley in the field events. For the women there were dominant runs on the track from Liz Barker, Rebecca Ferry and Gwyneth Hueter, well supported by Caroline Struthers (who multi-evented again) Popsie Wootten and Karen Cove, who all secured PBs in their events.
