Gemma in Contention for Worlds

Published: 6 July 2017

In winning the National 20k race walking title at Leeds on Saturday, Oxford City’s Gemma Bridge has put herself in contention for the World Championships in London. This was her firstnational title at the distance. Her fate is now in the hands of the selectors, but she has done all she can, not only winning the title and trials, but also setting the 2nd fastest time ever by a British athlete at this distance – 92.33. It was a huge personal best for Gemma, who said afterwards: I am not sure where that performance came from; I was planning on walking to secure selection. To win against this field is incredible and I am happy to secure my selection for London and to have four of us secure selection today is incredible! Getting a PB was the icing on the cake; it is going to be one awesome summer!

The race walks at the World Championships will be held on the Mall, on the last day of the championships, Sunday 13 August, and are free-to-watch (and free-to-cheer!). Gemma’s race is currently scheduled for a 12:20 start – full details at http://www.london2017athletics.com/iaafworldchamp/racewalks.
